Arete Project Open House – Saturday, July 29th 2017

Interested in learning more about the Arete Project? Come join AP students, faculty, and staff for our annual open house, July 29th, 2017, at Arthur Morgan School in Celo, North Carolina. Visitors will have the chance to participate in a campus labor project, take a tour of the beautiful AMS campus, learn about the program from current students, and hike in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

While the main events will all take place on Saturday, guests arriving Friday evening are invited to join us for dinner. Campers may spend Friday and/or Saturday night at AMS. Click below to register, and email for further information!

9am: Continental Breakfast
10am: Labor Party (e.g. garden work, campus clean-up)
11am: Campus Tour
12pm: Lunch
1:30pm: Arete Project Info Session
3pm: Free Time or Hike to Strawberry Fields
6:30pm: Dinner
8pm: Bonfire


Camping: Visitors are welcome to spend Friday and/or Saturday nights at AMS. Spaces for tent camping are available at AMS for $5/night per person.

Hotels and B&Bs: Also nearby is the Celo Inn, about a 20 minute walk from campus, with few rooms but very reasonable rates. Book early, as this is their high season! Further accommodations are available in Burnsville, NC and Spruce Pine, NC – each a 20 minute drive away.

Suggested Donation: We recommend that each visitor consider making a $5 donation for each meal s/he attends.

Getting Here:

By Car: AMS is located about an hour north of Asheville, NC. For directions, please plug the address below into Google Maps. (NOTE: Because of the rural location, other mapping software – Apple Maps, etc – may lead you astray! Use Google Maps!)

By Plane: The closest airport is in Asheville, North Carolina. From there it is about an hour drive to AMS; you can either rent a car or take the Yancey Transit Authority Shuttle ($20) by calling 828-682-6144 to arrange an advance reservation. You can also fly into Charlotte, NC or Greenville, SC. From either airport you can take the Asheville Shuttle to connect to the Yancey Shuttle, or rent a car.

By Bus: Asheville is served by Greyhound Bus Lines. You can arrange for the Yancey Transit Authority Shuttle to pick you up at the terminal by calling 828-682-6144.
